How to Attach a Lockbox
Step-by-step guide to installing your lockbox for secure property access during showings.
When your home goes on the market, a lockbox is how agents access the property for showings. It attaches to your front door and holds a key inside. Your lockbox comes pre-programmed with a code, so all you need to do is install it correctly and make sure it works. This takes about two minutes.
Here is exactly how to do it, step by step.
Step 1: Enter the Code
Your lockbox has a combination code that was set before it was sent to you. Turn the dials to your assigned code. Once the correct combination is entered, you will be able to open the lockbox body.
Step 2: Open the Lockbox
With the code entered, push the lever to open the lockbox. This exposes the key compartment and the shackle mechanism at the top.
Step 3: Release the Shackle
The top of the lockbox has a U-shaped shackle — that is the part that wraps around your door handle. To release it, slide the inside lever to the left. The shackle will pop free so you can open it wide enough to fit around your door handle or hasp.
Step 4: Attach to the Door
Loop the shackle around your front door handle. Make sure it sits securely and is not hanging at an angle or loosely resting on the handle. The lockbox should hang straight down from the handle so it is easy for agents to access.
Step 5: Tug to Verify
Give the lockbox a firm tug downward. It should not slide off or shift. If it moves freely, reposition it so the shackle is fully seated around the handle. You want it locked in place — this box will be hanging on your door through showings, weather, and the occasional curious neighbor.
Step 6: Insert the Key
Place your house key inside the key compartment. Make sure it sits flat and is not jammed or wedged at an angle. If the key is forced in, agents may have trouble retrieving it during a showing, and that is a problem you do not want. The key should slide in and out smoothly.
Step 7: Lock It Up
Close the lockbox body and turn the tumblers away from your code to scramble them. This locks the compartment. No one can open it without the correct combination.
Step 8: Test It
This is the step people skip — do not skip it. Re-enter the code, open the lockbox, remove the key, then put the key back and lock it again. Confirm the whole process works smoothly from start to finish. If an agent cannot get the key out during a showing, that showing may not happen.
Quick Reference
- Enter your assigned code on the dials
- Push the lever to open the body
- Slide the inside lever left to release the shackle
- Loop the shackle around your door handle
- Tug firmly to make sure it is secure
- Place the key inside — flat, not jammed
- Close the body and scramble the tumblers
- Test the full open-retrieve-close cycle
Bottom Line
A properly installed lockbox is a small detail that makes a big difference. If agents cannot access your home easily, showings get missed — and missed showings mean missed offers. Take two minutes to install it right, test it once, and you are good to go.
